The Heat is Far from Over: Why Cooling Gear is Essential into Fall and Beyond

As we sweat through the final days of summer, it’s tempting to look forward to cooler fall temperatures. But don’t pack away your cooling gear just yet! Depending on where you live, relief from the heat may still be weeks, or even months, away.

We’ve seen record-high temperatures across much of the country, and that trend is likely to continue. Understanding these regional temperature patterns can help you stay comfortable and safe as the seasons change.

Fun Fact: The Hottest Days Are Yet to Come

It might surprise you to learn that the Summer Solstice on June 21st, the day with the most sunlight, is not usually the hottest day of the year. For most of the country, the highest temperatures don’t hit until mid-July through mid-August. This is because the Earth absorbs more heat from the sun during the day than it can release at night, causing temperatures to climb steadily throughout the summer.

But here’s a surprising fact: In many regions, September and October can be hotter than you think. For instance, Phoenix, Arizona, often experiences its hottest days in late August and early September, with temperatures frequently soaring above 100°F. Similarly, cities like Los Angeles and San Diego can see some of their highest temperatures of the year well into September, long after the typical “summer” months have passed.

In many parts of the country, September and even October can be hotter than April and May! For example, on the West Coast, the hottest days often come after September 1st. So if you’re in California or other western states, brace yourself for some lingering heat.

Don't let fall fool you

Just because the hottest day of the year has passed doesn’t mean you’re in the clear. Fall can still bring temperatures that are hotter than you might expect. For instance, Dallas, Texas, and Atlanta, Georgia, often experience their second heat peak in September, where temperatures can rival those of midsummer. Staying aware of the forecast and taking steps to protect yourself from heat-related illnesses is crucial. This is where having a cooling plan—and the right Cooling Gear—comes into play.
