We have all been there: having a great summer day, and as the temperature rises, we ignore it because we're having fun. The next day, we may be dehydrated and very fatigued. But what about all the people who are in the heat every day? Researchers and doctors are discovering that there are serious long-term health effects.
First and foremost is the risk of death from exposure to heat and extreme heat, which is becoming more common globally. According to the World Health Organization, "Heat-related mortality for people over 65 years of age increased by approximately 85% between 2000–2004 and 2017–2021. " Studies show that approximately 489,000 heat-related deaths occur each year worldwide.
Death is the most extreme health effect, but what about day-to-day exposure? Some new studies have recently been released. Researchers from the University of Southern California’s Leonard Davis School of Gerontology have found genetic changes in our molecules that increase the speed of the aging process. In other words, heat makes your body old at almost the same rate as smoking and drinking. Heat is literally shaving years off people's lives.
Heat has this power because it affects not just one part of the body, but all the systems working together. Prolonged exposure can put intense strain on your cardiovascular system, kidneys, lungs, brain and nervous system, and even your skin. These aren’t just temporary issues like dehydration or sunburn that clear up in a few days—heat stress can lead to long-term damage, serious illness, or even be life-threatening if not addressed.
The heart plays a central role in heat regulation by pumping cooled blood from the skin back to the body’s core, helping maintain a safe internal temperature. Meanwhile, the kidneys support hydration and electrolyte balance, essential for producing sweat, the body’s natural cooling system. Every organ has a part to play, and when heat overwhelms one, it stresses them all.
But here’s the good news: heat-related injuries and shortened lifespans due to heat exposure are largely preventable. The key is preparation.
