Heat Hangover: Why Your Holiday Weekend Wiped You Out (and How to Prevent It)

Heat Hangover: Why Your Holiday Weekend Wiped You Out (and How to Prevent It)

What is a “heat hangover”?

The photos from the weekend look great: sunshine, grilling, yard projects, parades, games, maybe a con or festival. But the next day? You feel wrecked.

You’re exhausted, dizzy, foggy, a little nauseous, maybe nursing a sunburn and a pounding headache. You tell yourself, “I just overdid it,” or “It was the food,” or “I guess I can’t handle big days anymore.”

There’s another piece of the puzzle: heat hangover.

A heat hangover is that drained, shaky, “I can’t move today” feeling you get after spending too long in the heat. Your body has been working overtime to keep your core temperature down. Even after you’re back in the air‑conditioning, it can take hours (or all the next day) to feel normal again.

And if you live with heat sensitivity from MS, POTS, dysautonomia, lupus, fibromyalgia, migraine, menopause, autism, or you’re in heavy costumes, gear, or uniforms, that “hangover” can hit even faster and harder.

How heat beats you up (even when you’re “just warm”)

When your body is hot for hours, it doesn’t just make you sweaty. Heat stress can:

  • Drain your energy and make you feel bone‑deep fatigue
  • Trigger dizziness, lightheadedness, and headaches
  • Make thinking harder (hello, brain fog)
  • Make pain, spasms, or sensory overload worse
  • Leave you feeling weak, shaky, and “off” long after you’re back inside

Most people don’t connect those “off” days to the heat. They think they’re getting older, they ate the wrong thing, like that third corn dog, or they just need more coffee. So they start avoiding barbecues, parades, games, cons, rehearsals, tournaments, yard work, and outdoor jobs. Not because they want to, but because they’re tired of paying for it afterward.

In more serious cases, heat stress can slide into heat exhaustion and even heatstroke. Warning signs like confusion, a pounding headache, no longer sweating, and hot, dry skin are a medical emergency and a 911 situation, not something to “sleep off.”

Where a heat hangover shows up in real life

A heat hangover doesn’t look the same for everyone, but we hear the same stories over and over from our customers:

  • People with heat sensitivity and chronic illness
“I went to one cookout and spent the next two days in bed.”
“I made it to my kid’s game but missed the rest of the weekend.”

  • Outdoor workers and volunteers
Long shifts in the sun or humidity leave you wiped out, even if you’re hydrated and doing “all the right things.”

  • Cosplayers, fursuiters, mascots, and performers
Under layers of fabric, foam, or armor, you heat up fast. You might make it through a set, parade, or photoshoot, but the crash afterward can be brutal.

  • Wheelchair users and seated folks
Sitting in the sun or heat, on the sidelines, at appointments, at events, can sneak up on you. You don’t feel “that hot” until you suddenly do, and the recovery is long.

If any of that sounds familiar, what you’re feeling isn’t weakness. It’s physics and biology, aka a heat hangover.

Cooling smarter, not just harder

Fans, cold drinks, and shade absolutely help, but when heat is a repeat trigger for you, they’re not always enough, especially on long days.

For a lot of our customers, one set of cooling packs only gets them part of the way:

  • One walk but not the errands after
  • One show but not the second one
  • One parade but not the party
  • One half of the workday, then they’re done

That’s why we created ThermApparel Double Pack Bundles.

ThermApparel UltraCool Double Pack Bundle showing a black UltraCool Garment and 16 cooling packs and a definition of Double Pack Bundle which reads. Something that lets you refreeze, swap and actually enjoy the next hot weekend.

Each Double Pack Bundle comes with:

  • One cooling garment (UnderCool, UltraCool, or RallyWrap)
  • Two full sets of cooling packs

You wear one set while the other refreezes. After about 20–60 minutes in ice water, a fridge, or a freezer, you swap packs and keep going. Instead of one round of cooling and then calling it quits, you get multiple rounds in a single day.

Think of it like having extra batteries for your body’s cooling system.

How Double Pack Bundles help you beat the heat hangover

Here’s what you get when you add that second set of packs:

More cooling time
Two full sets of packs mean you’re not done when the first set melts. You can cover long weekends, long shifts, and full con days with planned swaps.

All‑day coverage
Refreeze packs in ice water, a fridge, or a freezer in about 20–60 minutes, then switch: one set on your body, one set recharging. Repeat as needed.

Comfort, not shock
Our phase change material freezes at skin‑safe temperatures, 70˚F/21˚C, so you get steady cooling instead of painful ice‑cold, then soggy, and then warm.

Less “paying for it later”
By keeping your core temperature more stable, you’re giving your body a chance to enjoy the day without such a big crash afterward.

Which Double Pack Bundle is right for you?

Different lives, different heat problems, so we built a few options:

UnderCool Double Pack Bundle
Low‑profile cooling under everyday clothes for errands, appointments, walks, and daily heat sensitivity.

RallyWrap Double Pack Bundle
Flexible wrap cooling around your torso, lap, shoulders, or back, designed with wheelchair users and seated folks in mind.

UltraCool Double Pack Bundle
Maximum cooling power for costumes, crews, riggers, mascots, fursuiters, Santas, and outdoor workers under hot lights or in heavy gear.

All of them use the same refreeze‑and‑swap idea: stay ahead of the heat, instead of chasing it after you’re already miserable.

You don’t have to sit out the next big day

If your last hot weekend left you thinking “Never again,” that’s understandable, but it doesn’t have to be your only option.

With the right cooling strategy, you can:

  • Stay longer at the barbecue without spending the next day in bed
  • Make it through your whole shift instead of tapping out halfway
  • Survive the parade, the game, and the photos
  • Enjoy the con and the day after

Your sunburn? Sorry, we can't help. But the heat hangover? That we can help with.
