Summer Travel Safety Guide

Don't let the heat get in the way of summer fun! When it comes to traveling and spending time outdoors in the summer heat, it's important to do certain cooling practices to stay safe. We've compiled this summer travel guide to keep you safe in the heat!

1. Stay hydrated

Water is your best friend when you're out and about in the hot weather. The amount of water you should drink varies depending on your age and what you're doing, but it's typically a good practice to drink a few ounces every 30 minutes. If you're out in the heat for a prolonged period of time, over 2-3 hours, you'll need to drink something high in electrolytes, like a sports drink, to replenish yourself.

2. Keep away from hot enclosed spaces

Heat-related illnesses are a real danger over the summer, particularly for children. Small kids and young teens have thinner skin than adults and are therefore more susceptible to burns, heat stress, and heat fatigue. In order to stay cool it's important to stay in well-ventilated areas and away from enclosed spaces. If you must be in an enclosed space, like a car, always have some ventilation, preferably air conditioning, on.

3. Protect yourself

If you expect to be out in the sun for more than 30 minutes, always wear at least 15 SPF sunscreen. Remember that sunscreen, regardless if its lotion or spray, requires 15-20 minutes to set in before you go out. Wear light clothes and layers to keep cool throughout the day and consider bringing a hat or umbrella for shade. Bringing along cooling packs or a cooling vest can also help!

4. Take breaks

For long travels out in the sun, it's important to take breaks in the shade every 2-3 hours. Proper rest is required to cool your body and avoid heat-related illnesses, keeping in mind that children will need more time to rest. Hydrating during these rest periods is ideal!

These things may seem overly simple but they are very important. It is an unfortunate fact that dozens of people and pets die due to heat-related illnesses every year. Remember to plan ahead during your travels to ensure you have these things in place so you breathe easily. Stay hydrated and stay cool!
