What's the #1 way to avoid death? Science continues to agree on the dreaded answer of "diet and exercise". But lots of people go to the gym routinely and see no positive results in their health. So what gives? Working out harder does not necessarily mean you're getting more out of your fitness routine. Here's our tips on how to work out smarter, not harder!
Change Up Your Routine
Our bodies are really good at adapting to and learning practiced behaviors. Unfortunately, this means that your body gets bored of the 30-minute jog you do on a treadmill three times a week. Studies show that you get more out of your workout when you alternate between exercises every 5-10 minutes. For example, you could run on that treadmill for 10 minutes, hop on the elliptical for another 10, then close out your day by cycling during your last 10 minutes.
Incorporate a Full Body Workout
Working out on a machine all the time is simple and tempting for most gym goers. Don't give in! Not only are machines repetitive (and your body gets quickly bored of them as stated earlier) they're also really ineffective. Think about it, each machine is specifically designed to work out just one part of your body. That means that any time you spend on a machine is spent working on just one area of your body. A full body workout (holding weights while doing lunges or aerobics for example) is a better use of your time and much more effective workout.
Join a Class
Okay so you've been trying to change up your routine but coming up with new workouts is frustrating and exhausting. Join a class! Nearly every gym or recreational center these days offers a wide range of fitness classes in a variety of difficulty levels. Working out with other people can be a powerful motivator and your instructor will make all of the workout decisions for you. It's a win win!
In all of this, it's important to remember the basics:
- Don't workout on an empty stomach--- have a smoothie or a protein bar for some energy before exercising.
- Stay hydrated--- make sure you continue to drink water throughout your workout.
- Stay warmed up--- warming up at the start of your routine is important, but it's also important to stay warmed up and loose throughout your routine.
- Stay cool--- working out can be dangerous if you're overheated. Luckily we have just the thing to keep you cool. Try out our signature cooling vest, UnderCool, today!
